Ronnie O’Sullivan: The Edge of Everything (2023)

Director and Co-Editor

113’ Feature documentary

Facing the end of a wildly successful but turbulent career, snooker legend Ronnie O’Sullivan is finally keeping the game at arm’s length. But over the course of a season leading to a career-defining tournament, and triggered by memories of the past, he finds himself spiralling back into the sport's intense grip.

Produced by David Beckham's Studio 99 and directed by Sam Blair, Ronnie: The Edge of Everything is a multi-layered feature documentary with unprecedented access to a genius as he grapples with his talent and his demons.

In one way this is a triumph of film-making, a focussed, unyielding study of depression, genius – and the very rich, very damaged carcass of a once-smiling, diffident boy the sport has left behind .... O’Sullivan is mic’d so close as he plays snooker that you can hear his groans, his curses, his stream of damaged consciousness as he wrestles with immensely good being never quite good enough. ☆☆☆☆

What’s on the screen alternates between profound, distressing, exciting, and uplifting while also questioning the viewer about how much they project onto their heroes - and how real life is always more complex than the movie that plays in fans’ heads. ☆☆☆☆

Of all the powerful scenes I saw at the cinema in 2023, there is one that has truly stuck with me. It’s not from an award winner, blockbuster, or similar critical darling – the moment occurred during the sports documentary Ronnie O’Sullivan: The Edge of Everything.
